Overview

Breadcrumbs is a horror-themed game where players use imagery and audio clues to escape a maze. During my junior year’s spring semester, I participated in a weekend hackathon where teams would have to create a game based on the theme “breadcrumbs.” Players will need to pay close attention to their environment to find all the keys and dodge the monsters.

Character Design: The Blind Monster

I designed one of the two monsters in the game: a monster that is blind but has heightened hearing. Initially, I created a large, imposing creature with spikes to suggest danger, but I wanted to emphasize that the monster’s blindness was its main trait. To communicate this visually, I omitted the eyes entirely, replacing them with “X’s.”

I used dark blue and brown colors to give the monster an intimidating, unfriendly look, ensuring it blended seamlessly into the uncanny environment of the maze.

Environmental Art

I worked on the design of the maze’s walls. By adjusting the contrast in the maze’s walls, I was able to create areas of deep darkness that felt both claustrophobic and dangerous. The shadows in the environment suggested hidden threats, making players feel uncertain about what might be lurking just out of sight.

In addition to the walls, I also designed various props throughout the maze to reinforce the horror theme. One example was the inclusion of skeletal remains scattered throughout the maze and ghostly “bread” props. These props would help contribute to the eerie and scary feel of the maze.
